For a Greek beer from Greek barley
Macedonian Thrace Brewery SA has from the start adhered to the highest production values and to the quintessential authenticity of its products.

Consistent with these aims and with a vision focused in the future, the company invests today in the preparation of 10.000 acres in the virtually untouched, fertile plains of Rodopi, devoted exclusively to the cultivation of a special variety of barley, essential in the production of beer.

The preparation of the soil, as well as the whole process until the collection of the seeds will follow the principles of integrated management, i.e. the selection of the most affliction resistant plants, the weekly scrutiny of the crops by qualified agronomists and the minimal, or zero, use of pesticides.

The cultivation of barley on Greek soil, beyond supplying the basic ingredient for a truly Greek beer, makes also sense as an alternative crop with considerable benefits for the soil and the environment when compared with other, more water-consuming crops like cotton or tobacco.

Additionally, Macedonian Thrace Brewery SA is currently enlarging its facilities with the creation of a new, most advanced unit for the procession of malt.

Cooling water recycling

In respect of the environment and with regard of the expected lack of drinking water threatening Greece for the coming years, the Macedonian Thrace Brewery S.A. has installed a modern plant to recycle cooling water.
Since the year 2006 approximately 20.000 m3 are saved annually in that way, which equals the yearly water consumption of a village with 300 habitants.
